Welcome to our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program
The training program is affiliated with the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. The major training site for our fellows is Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, an urban tertiary level comprehensive regional center of excellence for children in the MidSouth region.
Mission & Highlights
Our program is carefully tailored to provide each fellow with a unique and comprehensive experience to prepare them for a successful career in clinical and academic pediatric emergency medicine. We accept graduates who have completed an RRC accredited pediatric residency or emergency residency program. We are a three year program for all fellows, with the third year typically required to complete their scholarly work and research project.
Highlights:
A. High volume ED (top 10 pediatric census in the nation) & high level of acuity with exposure to the breadth & depth of our specialty.
B. "Level 1" trauma experience with PEM's as the initial team leaders
C. We manage the airway without bumping shoulders with anesthesia or EM residents
D. Eclectic faculty composition with emphasis on work-life balance
E. We always have an onsite board eligible &/or certified PEM as back up
F. We do not rely on fellows for primary coverage but they function as "Junior" attendings
G. Moonlighting is encouraged as long as it does not interfere with their core learning
H. Active research program in applications of bedside ultrasonography in the PEM. The institution has invested in a dedicated portable ultrasound machine for the ED.
I. Simulation training with mock code exercises initiated
J. Fellows are given the latitude to pursue their passion as part of their administrative and scholarly contributions to the division
K. Flexible ED leadership and management style with focus on customer satisfaction and trialing new processes (LEAN, Team Zones, CPOE, Physician in Triage & Assessment)
L. Collaborative relationship with other divisions like pediatric orthopedics, cardiology, radiology, ICU, ID, nursing, pediatric residency
M. Professional practice management resources with education in accurate coding, documentation & RVU capture.
N. Active ED procedural sedation program with use of wide range of agents including propofol, nitrous oxide & etomidate
N. We are moving into a brand new ED in September 2010!!

Curriculum Highlights
Clinical Experience
Approximately 900 hours per year are spent supervising the Emergency Department at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center. A board-certified pediatric emergency medicine attending physician is available on site at all times. In July of 2004, fellows began gaining experience in sedation by rotating through our radiology sedation service. This service is staffed exclusively by PEM physicians and provides them an opportunity to gain proficiency in all aspects of procedural sedation and analgesia. This includes successful completion of our sedation training module. All fellows spend one month in their first year gaining additional experience in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Fellows entering the Pediatric Emergency Medicine training program after a pediatric residency spend a cumulative of four months during their 3 yrs, treating adult emergency patients at the the Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, our affiliated training site. Those entering via emergency medicine would complete pediatric inpatient service, pediatric subspecialty clinics, and neonatal/nursery rotations. Additional clinical experience is gained through the required electives of orthopedics, radiology, obstetrics, pediatric anesthesia & sedation and EMS Other optional elective rotations round out the fellow's clinical exposure.
Research Experience
Fellows become proficient with investigative techniques and skills, and apply these to both retrospective and prospective clinical or epidemiological research projects. Formalized study in statistics and research design is included in the fellowship, from both within and without the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Attending physicians in the division provide mentoring and serve as a rich source of research ideas. These ideas and other research-related topics are discussed by division members and fellows at our monthly conferences. Fellows are financially supported when submitting and presenting their data at regional or national meetings. A major goal of the fellowship is the completion of a well-designed study that is published in a peer reviewed journal. A Scholarship Oversight Committee is set up for each fellow to mentor progress in research. Dedicated months for pursuit of their research during the three-years of their Pediatric Emergency Medicine training program facilitate scholarly activity.
Teaching Experience
Fellows have ample opportunity to develop and improve their ability to be effective teachers in a variety of settings. These range from one-on-one and small group sessions with families and residents in the Emergency Department, to large group conferences. Fellows actively participate in the Emergency Department lecture series given to all residents at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center and rotating family practice residents. Fellows receive guidance in creation of visual and printed material for educational purposes.
Administrative Experience
Junior fellows select cases and present them at the monthly Emergency Department Interesting Case Conference. Senior fellows gain administrative exposure through their coordination of monthly Emergency Department Morbidity and Mortality conferences, Evidence Based Medicine conferences, Journal Clubs, Bioethics Conference and resident teaching forums such as mock codes. Instruction regarding other administrative and financial issues of importance to an Emergency Department physician is given at dedicated didactic sessions & at staff meetings. By the completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be expected to be familiar with the management and administration of the Emergency Department. Senior fellows will have administrative responsibilities (such as committee memberships) through the hospital or Department of Pediatrics. Fellows can also gain administrative experience through self scheduling.
Salary and Benefits
Salary for a PL-4 fellow during 2008-2009 is $48,495.00/ year. Three weeks of vacation are available each year. Medical insurance is available. Fellows are also eligible for long term disability and life insurance.
